Assemblies

The first assembly of the year was held with much ceremony. We even held a parade of teams much like the parade of countries that open the games. The teams were led around the gym by the leading point earner who carried a torch. Music played as she led first her team around the gym, joined by the other two teams after each had completed a lap. Each new team carried their 'banner' as they joined the parade.
Unveiling of their team names and chants took place and the teams found out their placement - bronze, silver or gold.
In December, each team received an Olympic mascot to complete their teams. One lucky person from each team will eventually win the mascot assigned to their team.

New AR Year

Our year has been especially busy it seems. This is the first chance I've had to update how the new year is going.

Because of the Olympic Games being held this year in Vancouver, BC , the teachers decided that 'On the Road to the Olympic Games' should be our theme this year. From September until the games begin on Feb. 12, our goal is to use our points as kilometres and try to get to Vancouver from Sturgis, Saskatchewan.

Each team was selected from the type of Olympic events participating in the Winter Games. We divided the school into 3 teams - gold, silver, and bronze at each month assembly. They were assigned skating, sledding and skiing.

New Record

With AR at an end, our new record has been established. Caitlan, who held the record of 486.4 since 2002, was unseated not once but twice this year. Cole finished with a total of 531.8 points - only 20 behind the new record held by Kelly with 551.8 points. It took 7 years to break the record. How long will Kelly get to hold the record?

AR Finishes

Wow!
No one would believe how many books students were reading! I had stacks everywhere, before I could shelve.
Yesterday, we held our final AR assembly. Which team won? The Meteor Invaders won the 'title' of top team with 2639.5 points over the R2D2 Martians with 2487.5. Our students passed 6796 of the 7166 tests they took, earning them 5127 points for the whole school year.
The AR program tracks words read (only for those passed tests) and the students read an amazing 21,283,340 words!! (Just imagine if it tracked the other 400 tests they didn't pass!)

Students were treated to draws for everything from huge kites, CD player, MP3s, board games, outdoor games, sleeping bags to smaller items like bags with balls, pencils, notepads, etc. Top readers in each grade will get to choose books from the Scholastic flyer and the top three readers in each grade will get to dine out with their teacher.
Many thanks go to the Parent Support Group (parents and children who buy various food sales, etc.) for funding all the incentives for our program. The children read consistently, and often crazily if you saw our stacks of returned books, without really knowing if there were any incentives. It's so nice to see them interested in a program and reading! I could often hear them recommend a book to a friend or say they are "this" close to their personal goal they set for themselves. It was really great to hear!

It's official, the old AR point record has been broken.
Kelly's total is now 515.2 setting a new record.
The old record had been 486.4 points.

April Month ending Assembly

Students have really been reading! Only 143.9 points separates the two teams.
R2D2 Martians have 2107.3 points and The Meteor Invaders have 2251.2 points.
One more month to go!!!

AR team Totals

An assembly was held on April 1, 2009. The two teams waited anxiously to see which team was ahead. The Meteor Invaders came in first with 2038.4 points while the R2D2 Martians weren't far behind with 1883.8. Who will be ahead at the end of April???

Record to break

Since we have begun using AR at SES, we have kept track of top totals. Since 2002, Caitlan A., has held the record with 486.4 points. Two of our students this year are very close, and there is still 2 full months of reading. Will she be unseated?

Survivor Like Twist

In true "Survivor" fashion, we surprised our AR teams with a merge. The four teams have now become two. The R2D2s have joined the Martians to become the R2D2 Martians and the Meteors have joined with the Space Invaders becoming The Meteor Invaders. Now who will be the leading team?
